Why Do Newborn Babies Grunt ?

    Updated on 3 November 2023

    What is Baby Grunting?

Worried about your newborn baby grunting while sleeping? Don't be. Typically, newborn babies make grunting noises in connection with their digestive systems. Babies usually grunt when they are passing stools. While newborn grunting while sleeping is normal, it can indicate problems if it continues to persist unusually, caused due to trapped mucus, irregular breathing, or gastroesophageal reflux. Grunting in newborn is also referred to as 'grunting baby syndrome' by doctors.

To a new parent, baby grunting might seem a little scary at first, however, with time, you will understand that grunting is useful and allows the baby to pass their stools easily. Grunting is not a concern if your baby is living an active and healthy lifestyle and eats well - in such cases, the grunting will settle down after a while and is rarely a cause of concern.

    Is Newborn Grunting Normal?

If your newborn grunts, you might think that they are in pain, however, some grunting is normal and does not need to be of concern. Nonetheless, sometimes newborn grunting and squirming while sleeping may occur due to an underlying issue, not associated with typical bowel movements.

When babies are born, the muscles in their stomachs are not strong enough to pass stools without adding some pressure. Babies use their diaphragm muscles to release pressure to pass stools, which in turn puts pressure on their voice box, and makes them grunt.

    Common Reasons For Grunting

Among babies, there are several common reasons for grunting in addition to exercising their bowel movements. These include -

    • Irregular Breathing

As babies develop control over their breathing, they tend to grunt a little. Grunting due to irregular breathing is normal until they manage to get in sync with their breathing patterns.

    • Dreaming

If babies grunt during their sleep, it might mean that they are indicating a bowel movement.

    • Trapped Mucus

Babies tend to catch infections easily, and might have mucus collected in their nasal passage. This might lead to them grunting in their sleep, or in an awake state.

    • GER

Gastroesophageal reflux or acid reflux is common among babies; this usually happens when food rises from the stomach into the food pipe. This might cause babies to grunt as they try to swallow or breathe during acid reflux.

    When Grunting Signals A Problem?

Grunting in newborn babies is normal if it is part of the digestive process, however, there are some situations where baby grunting while sleeping may signal a problem. Let's find out when.

If you notice that your baby grunts at the end of each breath, this could signal some sort of respiratory issue that the baby is facing. In such cases, it is better to get the grunting checked by a doctor.

While newborn grunting while sleeping is normal, it stops after a while. So, if you notice that your baby is in constant distress and continues to grunt for a longer time, and the grunting is accompanied by other symptoms like fever, illness, or anything unusual, then it would be best to visit a doctor to find out if there are any other problems your baby is facing.

In extreme situations, baby grunting could also be a sign of pneumonia, asthma, meningitis, sepsis, or heart or respiratory failure caused due to shortage of breath.

What Can You Do In The Meantime?

The first thing to be aware of when you hear your baby grunting is to monitor the grunting. In most cases, the grunting will be due to normal causes of bowel movements and will settle down once the baby's stomach muscles strengthen.

In the meantime, however, you can check your baby for signs of nasal flaring, weight loss, fever, pauses in their breathing cycle, blue tongue or skin, or any lethargy. If these issues persist, it would be prudent to visit a doctor.

    Home Remedies For Baby Grunting

If you are looking for ways to reduce your baby's grunting, try these home remedies -

    • Stimulation of the Anus

To help the baby pass stools easily, it may be wise to stimulate the anal area. You can do this by firmly circulating the index finger around the anus or pressing on the side of the anus to help the baby pass stools easily.

    • Change the Nursing Style

To prevent your baby from making grunting noises during the nursing process, try leaning the baby back, feeding on a single breast, or unlatching the baby.

    • Reduce Meal Sizes

Since grunting is a consequence of the digestive process, to reduce your baby's grunting, you can reduce their meal sizes and distribute them over the day.

If you think your baby is healthy and happy, then there is no reason to be concerned about their grunting noises. Suppose you do feel that the grunting in newborn persists, or sounds unusual. In that case, it's better to show your baby to the doctor to eliminate the possibility of any other problems or health disorders.
