Pregnancy is a significant milestone in a woman's life, and it comes with various physical and emotional changes. While most women realize they are pregnant after missing their period, some may experience early pregnancy symptoms even before their missed period. (Yes, missing a period is not the sole indicator of pregnancy!) This raises the question what are the symptoms of early pregnancy before missed period.

In this article, we will explore the early signs of pregnancy before missed period and what they mean. Knowing the signs of early pregnancy can help women prepare for the changes to come and make informed decisions about their health.

Early Signs of Pregnancy Before Missed Period

Let us understand what signs and symptoms of pregnancy can a woman experience before a missed period:

    1. Breast changes

Hormonal fluctuations in your body cause cyclical changes in your breasts. As a result, numerous women may suffer breast discomfort or tenderness before their periods. Some women may have a tingling sensation or discomfort in their breasts during the first few weeks of pregnancy because of early hormonal changes in the body.

    2. Sensitivity to smell

A heightened sense of smell is an early symptom of pregnancy. Estrogen, a hormone that increases during pregnancy, can make every little scent feel like an all-out assault on the nostrils. This change in smell can last throughout the first trimester and is believed to be a way for the body to protect the baby against external threats.

    3. Increased body basal temperature

If you have been tracking body basal temeprature in order to estimate when you're ovulating, you may notice that it increases around 1 degree during conception and stays elevated all through the pregnancy. The BBT is the body temperature measured first thing in the morning, upon arising from sleep.

    4. Nausea or vomiting

Morning sickness is another common sign of pregnancy. Additionally, women may experience nausea with or without vomiting. These symptoms usually present after a month of pregnancy. However, some women may feel this indication even before they miss a period.

    5. Implantation bleeding

It is typical for women to experience spotting throughout their periods. However, few realise this might be an early pregnancy sign. This spotting or implantation bleeding is most likely to be misinterpreted as a period by many women. Whereas, women who are on the lookout for early pregnancy signs and symptoms might perceive this as a probable pregnancy symptom.

    6. Decrease in appetite

During the first few weeks of pregnancy, the majority of women may experience an aversion to specific foods and fragrances. This may cause a reduction in appetite, even for meals they previously loved. There may also be excessive salivation at times. The rapid hormonal changes may affect the taste senses leading to aversions and reduced appetite.

    7. Urge to pee more often

If a woman has conceived, she may experience frequent urination. This is many due to the increased blood volume in the system during pregnancy. As a result, the kidneys tend to work overtime, causing a strong urge to urinate frequently throughout the pregnancy.

    8. Tiredness

Exhaustion or fatigue is one of the most prevalent early pregnancy symptoms, even before a missed period. Nature urges pregnant women to slow down. These abrupt changes in the body caused by an increase in progesterone hormone levels make the body fatigued. As a result, women may feel tired and exhausted all the time.

    9. Constipation

During the first few weeks of becoming pregnant, women may feel heartburn or trouble moving their bowels. Increasing hormone levels slow down the digestive system, resulting in constipation. These may also be the sole symptoms of early pregnancy, even before missed period.

    10. Changes in cervical mucus

Some women examine their cervical mucus in order to understand their ovulation and menstrual cycle better. They may also notice that their cervical mucus may become creamy when they conceive. And as the pregnancy progresses they may also experience increased vaginal discharge.

    11. Mood swings

Among the most common early signs of pregnancy before missed perios are mood swings. Pregnant women may notice PMS-like mood swings as early as 4 weeks into pregnancy. You can blame pregnancy hormones for these mood swings. And these mood swings may worsen as your pregnancy progresses.

What is the best time to take a pregnancy test?

As you notice these early signs of pregnancy, it's normal to be curious to take a pregnancy test. But taking a pregnancy test too early may not always bear positive news. Let us understand what's the best time to take a pregnancy test.

Ovulation usually happens on day 15 of a 28-day cycle. An egg gets fertilised in the fallopian tube and then goes into the uterus, lodging in the uterine wall during a normal pregnancy. Soon after a fertilised egg is implanted within the uterus, a woman's body starts to release hCG hormones in the developing placenta (tissue that feeds a growing baby). Trace quantities of hCG from early pregnancy may be discovered about eight days after ovulation. That implies a woman might obtain favourable findings many days before her menstruation begins.

The difficulty in determining when to take a test is that the first half of a menstrual cycle is more unpredictable than the second. The interval between the first day of menstruation and ovulation might vary from month to month. Sexual activity near ovulation increases the likelihood of sperm fertilising the released egg. Even yet, the time it takes for a fertilised egg to implant varies. And hCG is not created until after implantation.

We suggest that women test in the morning on the day they anticipate their period to begin for the most accurate results. This provides for flexibility in ovulation, fertilisation, and implantation time. Testing in the morning yields a concentrated urine sample which might contain more HCG hormone for the test to detect the early symptoms of pregnancy before missed period.

    Final thoughts

In conclusion, early signs of pregnancy before missed period can vary from woman to woman. While some women may experience more noticeable symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, and breast tenderness, others may not experience any symptoms at all. It's essential to remember that these symptoms can also be attributed to other conditions, and a missed period is the most reliable indicator of pregnancy. If you suspect that you might be pregnant, it is always best to confirm with a pregnancy test and seek medical advice from your healthcare provider.
