Pregnancy is a time of joy and excitement, but it can also bring about a host of unexpected changes in a woman's body. Many women notice dry lips during pregnancy, which may even begin to crack and chap. While this may seem like a minor inconvenience, it can be a significant source of discomfort for many expectant mothers.

In this article, we will delve into the mysteries of lip dryness during pregnancy, other lip changes such as dark lips during pregnancy and more importantly, we'll arm you with some expert tips to keep your pout plump and smooth.

    Symptoms

Chapped lips or cheilitis is a widespread condition that many women face during pregnancy. Though it is not a very serious condition and generally resolves easily, it is important to acknowledge it. Cracked lips during pregnancy are generally indicative of dehydration. The condition can be discomforting and may cause painful stings while eating something spicy or salty.

Here are some common symptoms of chapped or dry lips:

    • Cracks on the skin of lips

    • Peeling of skin on the lips

    • Sores that may also bleed sometime

    • Scaling lips

    • Stinging pain while eating something salty, citrusy, or spicy

    • Swelling

    • Flaking of lips

What Causes Lip Dryness During Pregnancy?

A lot of women experience chapped lips during pregnancy. And if you're pregnant, you may be wondering what are the possible reasons behind this. There are a few possible explanations for this including:

    1. Hormonal changes

One of the most common causes of dry lips in pregnancy is increased hormone progesterone. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause the skin to produce less oil, leading to lip dryness. Changes in weather and humidity levels can exacerbate this.

    2. Dehydration

Another possible cause of dry lips could be dehydration, probably becauseyou are not drinking enough water. Furthermore, vomiting, which often occurs during early pregnancy can also lead to dehydration, thus causing dry lips.

    3. Frequent urination

Another possible reason why you may notice cracked lips during pregnancy is the increased loss of fluid. Sometimes the increase in blood sugar levels during pregnancy causes kidneys to overwork, causing frequent urination and subsequently leading to dehydration.

    4. Nutrient deficiencies

The nutritional requirements of a woman suddenly go up during pregnancy as the body needs these nutrients for fetal growth and development. A lack of certain vitamins or minerals, such as vitamin B2 or iron, can result in dry and chapped lips.

These were some of the most common causes of dry lips in pregnancy. Now, let’s see some other lip changes that occur during pregnancy that women must be aware of.

How to Relieve Dry Lips During Pregnancy?

If you are experiencing dry or chapped lips during pregnancy, they can do a few things to help ease the dryness. These are as follows:

    • First, drink plenty of water. Vomiting is pretty common during pregnancy and can lead to dehydration, causing dry skin and lips. Drinking water will help keep their skin hydrated from the inside out.

    • Second, use a lip balm or ointment that contains an emollient. This will help seal moisture and protect the lips from further drying out. However, make sure to use only those products that don't contain any ingredients that can be unsafe for the baby.

    • Finally, avoid exposure to harsh weather conditions, such as wind and cold. If the expecting mother must be outdoors, they should cover up as much as possible to protect their skin. To help ease the dryness, they can also try using a humidifier in their home and should also avoid very hot showers.

If the dryness is severe and is also accompanied by itching, in such cases, one may also want to consult with their doctor. The doctor can then suitably prescribe the right cream or ointment to help relieve the dryness.

Are There Any Other Lip Changes That Can Happen While You’re Pregnant?

Besides lip dryness, lip swelling is another major lip phenomenon that occurs during pregnancy. ‘Pregnancy lips’ are surely a real thing. This generally happens because, during the third trimester of pregnancy, the blood vessels (capillaries) are dilated, causing increased blood flow, leading to somewhat fuller and plumper lips. The increased capillary density during pregnancy also makes the lips redder during pregnancy.

In addition to dryness and swelling, some women experience other changes to their lips during pregnancy. These can include increased sensitivity, slight discolouration (in some cases), and dark lips during pregnancy. These changes are usually temporary and will resolve after pregnancy. However, if any of these changes persist or become severe, immediately consult with the doctor to ensure that they are benign and not indicative of a more severe condition.

What Causes Darkening of Lips During Pregnancy?

Here are five potential causes of dark or pigmented lips during pregnancy:

    1. Hormonal Changes

Pregnancy triggers a surge in hormone production, including estrogen and progesterone. These hormonal fluctuations can stimulate the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin and lip color. As a result, some women experience increased melanin in their lips, leading to darkening.

    2. Melasma

Melasma, often referred to as the "mask of pregnancy," is a common skin condition during pregnancy. It leads to the development of dark patches on the face, and these patches can extend to the lips in some cases, causing lip darkening.

    3. Increased Blood Flow

Pregnancy results in increased blood flow throughout the body, including to the lips. This heightened blood flow can cause the lips to appear darker due to increased vascularization.

    4. Sun Exposure

Exposure to the sun's UV rays can exacerbate lip darkening during pregnancy. Melanin production increases in response to sun exposure, and the lips are particularly susceptible to UV damage, which can lead to hyperpigmentation.

    5. Genetic Predisposition

Some individuals may have a genetic predisposition to developing hyperpigmentation, including darkening of the lips, during pregnancy. If it runs in your family, you may be more prone to experiencing this condition.

    The Bottomline

In conclusion, dry lips during pregnancy can be a frustrating and uncomfortable experience for many women. However, with proper care and attention, it is a manageable condition that can be treated effectively. By understanding the causes of chapped and cracked lips during pregnancy, you can take proactive measures to prevent and alleviate this condition. Whether it is staying hydrated, using lip balms or humidifiers, or adjusting your diet to include more vitamins and nutrients, there are many effective remedies available.
