Ghee is consumed in every Indian kitchen household as a traditional cooking agent and, along with ghee and pregnancy, is the perfect blend for pregnant ladies. It is a household staple, and most parents advise we eat a spoonful of ghee to fight common ailments like stomach aches, coughs, and colds. Pregnant women are often told to consume ghee, especially by the elders of the family, as it is believed to assist vaginal delivery. However, there is no scientific proof of the same. Also, some people believe drinking ghee during pregnancy can aid in smooth digestion and smoothens the intestine.
Ghee is the Indian word for clarified butter, a great fat source. It comes from a Sanskrit word called 'Ghrita', also known as Sprinkle. It is obtained by separating the water from the butter content of the dahi or curd. This process is also referred to as churning the Dahi or curd. Simmering ghee is obtained by clarifying the fat by evaporating the water content from the creamy curd, which can be liquified when heated. The elements in ghee include vitamins A, D, E, and K, Omega 6 &9, calcium, magnesium, iron, butyric acid and beta carotene. The general benefits of ghee to the common person include:
Ghee contains a better ratio of brain-friendly fats such as Omega 3 and 6, which are suitable for the nerves and brain and enhance memory.
It also helps in mobilising fat cells and shrinking them to an extent stumping the stubborn fat since it contains essential amino acids.
It prevents cancer by reducing the formation of free radicals.
Promote digestion by aiding the secretion of stomach acids.
Lactose-intolerant people tolerated them.
It can increase appetite as ghee aids in weight loss.
It reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases since it contains an essential fatty acid.
When you are pregnant, it is safe to consume a moderate amount of ghee every day. Since ghee is easier to digest and stimulates metabolism, unlike other dairy products, you may want to control its consumption if you are overweight or obese. Additionally, ghee is often a better substitute for butter and oil since it is a source of healthy fat. However, it is better to consult a doctor before including it in your diet.
About two to three teaspoons of ghee can be included during pregnancy. Doctors recommend six tablespoons of fat per day in your diet, out of which you can consist of 10 to 12% saturated fat such as ghee.
Ghee can be consumed throughout pregnancy from the beginning to the end. However, if weight is a concern, you should be cautious about its consumption.
Since ghee has laxative properties, it is believed to induce labour. During the third trimester, the consumption of ghee is said to irritate the bowel to extend the contractions to the uterus, thereby inducing labour. Ghee is also believed to lubricate the vagina and assist in a smooth delivery. However, there is no scientific evidence to prove any of it. However, ghee is a healthy source of fat that benefits both you and the baby.
Since ghee contains a combination of omega fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, it offers various benefits during pregnancy. Some of these are:
Since pregnant women suffer from poor digestion, ghee is recommended as it has anti-viral properties. It also contains butyric acid, a short-chain fatty acid which is helpful for the intestines, colon cells and overall digestive health. A few teaspoons of ghee can flush out toxins from the body and give a thrust to digestion and immunity.
Many nutritionists recommend ghee in their weight loss diets. It is essential for maintaining hormonal balance. Since pregnant women suffer many stress-related problems, ghee is conducive to their health and immunity. Since ghee contains vitamins and butyrate, it helps to fight free radicals and oxidative stress. It also helps your body to stay lethargy free.
Ghee is a tasty and good source of fat and enhances every dish's taste and smell. A woman requires about 200-300 extra calories every day during pregnancy. So, ghee can provide the necessary calories in the form of tadka or on top of the chapati. Dry fruit laddoos made in ghee are given during pregnancy to help nourish and satisfy food cravings healthily.
Since ghee has a moisturising effect, it hydrates the skin and is often used as a component in ayurvedic massage packs. It has healing properties which heal swelling, wounds, cuts and bums. Since it is rich in omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, ghee massage may benefit pregnant women as they suffer from swelling often.
Ghee is a vitamin-rich superfood recommended for pregnant women. It contains the omega-3 fatty acid DHA which is suitable for memory and cognitive abilities. It boosts the baby's proper growth in the womb and the baby's brain development as it contains healthy fats, and the human brain is made of fats. It also aids bone development since it contains vitamins A, D and K.
Ghee assists in boosting metabolism during pregnancy and burning excess fat post-delivery. Ghee is also essential in fat-loss diets since it is rich in DHA and CLA.
Ghee protects against blockages of the arteries caused by excess calcium deposits since it contains vitamin K2. The CLA found in ghee also reduces bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol levels in the body. Additionally, it also assists in digestion and reduces inflammation as well as oxidative stress. During the vulnerable phase of pregnancy, it also helps boost immunity and aids in a smooth delivery. Ghee is added to food like Panjeeri to increase the flow of breast milk after delivery.
Stretch marks are common during pregnancy as the skin expands rapidly to make room for the baby. However, as pregnancy progresses, the belly is stretched the most and can spread to the arms, legs and buttocks. Ghee is a home remedy to remove stretch marks by gently applying it over the affected areas.
The above benefits are not scientifically proven. However, they are believed by many.

Consuming ghee has not shown any side effects, as ghee is natural and has ayurvedic properties. It is recommended to consume extra 300 calories for pregnant women, from the usual diet to provide nutrition to the baby. However, everything needs to be consumed in a moderate amount. Consuming higher amounts of ghee can lead to the following:
Excess weight gain in you and your baby. It could also make normal delivery difficult due to reduced physical activity in the last few weeks of pregnancy combined with extra ghee consumption.
If you are on a high calorific diet or consume junk food often, it can lead to obesity, eventually leading to breathlessness.
Shedding extra weight after delivery can be pretty tricky.
It can be used raw or added to dishes while cooking. You can use ghee:
As a topping on your paratha, roti, rice or chapati.
It can be used to prepare flavoured rice or mixed vegetable curries.
Make desserts such as laddoos, kheer, and many more.
Along with milk.
It is a fact that women must consume healthy, balanced food for the entire period during pregnancy. Especially during the 9th month, it is recommended for pregnant women to consume foods that aid in contractions and help in a smooth delivery. Ghee is suggested during the last stage of pregnancy since it has the property of preventing constipation and assists in inducing labour. However, there is no scientific evidence to prove it, so it must be consumed moderately.

Using desi ghee for pregnancy in Ayurveda is highly recommended since it can avoid illnesses like colds and flu. Desi ghee is obtained from cows' milk which contains a high percentage of vitamins, minerals and antioxidant agents. Due to its tremendous healing effect, ghee is highly valuable.
Ghee is a natural agent which promotes the baby's brain development. It can be consumed with milk with a pinch of turmeric and a teaspoon of honey.
Desi ghee can cure digestive problems.
During the process of pregnancy, it nourishes the mother and the baby.
Although there is no unknown risk of consuming ghee other than gaining extra weight during pregnancy, it is recommended to use it in moderate amounts. A balanced diet is essential during pregnancy since it nourishes you and the baby. Ghee can also be included in your diet in reasonable quantities since it is a good source of omega fat. Although ghee has many benefits during pregnancy, there is no scientific evidence to prove it. It is also recommended to seek doctors' advice whenever you plan to make any dietary changes during pregnancy.
