TV & OTT
Updated on 2 November 2022
Netflix has emerged as a titan in streaming services, and its meteoric rise is far from over. The OTT platform is currently churning out full-fledged blockbuster movies and television shows that would put any large studio to shame. However, it also knows how to cater to its audiences, which is why popular, classic films are also part of it.
Here are five such all-time classics that still draw people to watch on Netflix.
Consistently taking the top spot in IMDB, the film review website, The Shawshank Redemption, is a favorite of the masses for a reason. It has heart, depth, unimaginable challenges, memorable characters, a moving background score, and iconic dialogues.
Follow Andy Dufresne’s journey through prison as he makes friends and enemies and confronts his inner demons. Overall, the story will warm even the coldest of hearts. The film doesn’t pull back its punches when it comes to emotional moments, so keep some tissues handy. The Shawshank Redemption is a prime example of a classic film that continues to be a staple crowd pleaser, making it one of the best movies on Netflix.
Tom Hanks is a gifted actor, and no movie shows his acting prowess better than Forrest Gump. It follows the tale of Forrest, a man with a slightly low IQ, and his incredible journey in life. Whether battling on the frontlines in the Vietnam War, bringing a cynical, disabled friend back from the depths of darkness, or running across the country and starting a movement, this man achieves it all in the movie.
As incredulous as it all sounds, it makes perfect sense in the context of the movie. At the heart of it all is the undying love of the male lead for his childhood friend Jenny, making Forrest Gump an incredible journey as we cheer and root for the couple. Catch this Netflix movie for a memorable experience.
A film adaptation of the iconic Mario Puzo novel, The Godfather, is truly ‘the godfather’ of all gangster movies in Hollywood. Streaming on Netflix, the movie follows the life of the Corleone family in 1940s New York. The story primarily focuses on Michael Corleone, the family's youngest son, played by Al Pacino. When his father, Vito Corleone, is gunned down on the streets by rival gang members, He ultimately delves into the world of crime, taking his father's seat.
The movie contains incredible performances, fantastic set pieces, practical stunts, and iconic characters like Sonny, Clemenza, and Luca Brasi. The brooding Don himself, The Godfather, is one of Francis Ford Coppola’s finest works, perhaps only topped by its sequel, making it one of the best movies on Netflix.
Quentin Tarantino is a peculiar filmmaker, and Pulp Fiction is one of his quirkiest films to date. It follows the life of two henchmen Vincent Vega, played by John Travolta, and Jules Winnfield, played by Samuel L Jackson. Vega is known for not being too bright yet always getting the job done.
Meanwhile, Jules is not a man to be trifled with, as he is quick to anger and can bring down the wrath of God as he quotes verses from the Bible verbatim. Another central character is Butch Coolidge, a gifted boxer played by Bruce Willis. The plot follows these characters and four seemingly unrelated and violent stories that come together in the end to form a neat conclusion. Set in Los Angeles, every frame of this film is memorable, from the dancing scene featuring Travolta and Uma Thurman to the diner scene, where Samuel L Jackson flexes his acting muscles. Ultimately, Pulp Fiction is a wild ride from start to finish, earning the title of one of the best movies on Netflix.
Perhaps the movie that brought superhero films to life in Hollywood, The Dark Knight, is one of the most brilliant works of Christopher Nolan. It features Christian Bale, who plays Batman, the caped crusader watching over the crime-infested city of Gotham, and Joker, his archnemesis, played by the legendary Heath Ledger.
The plot revolves around Batman scrambling to stop the Joker as the latter tries to unmask his identity and bring the city to its knees. While Bale is a great actor, Ledger’s performance as the maniacal clown stole the show. Completely psychotic, unpredictable, and terrifying, every scene with Ledger is a guaranteed goosebumps moment. Because it was the last film of the late actor, the performance takes on a whole new dimension. However, do remember to watch its prequel, Batman Begins, to get the full context of the story, which is also available on Netflix.
