During pregnancy, women go through varying levels of discomfort and pain. In some cases, these aches can be extreme. These aches are usually targeted at the back, legs, and feet during the second and third trimester of the pregnancy. This discomfort can cause a lack of sleep, difficulty moving around, and a lot of frustration. If you do not want to use any over the counter medication because you are worried, they might affect the baby, you can use Epsom salts.
Epsom salt is the crystallized form of Magnesium Sulfate used to ease pains and aches for various ailments and they are safe to use during pregnancy as well. It is a pure mineral that can be used as a bathtub salt and has several benefits.
As Epsom salts are the crystallized form of Magnesium, they help repair body tissues and regulate your blood sugar levels. Magnesium has also helped treat irritable uterus. Magnesium has a better effect if absorbed through the skin rather than if taken in solid form and does not interact with other drugs.
Doctors recommend using 2 cups of Epsom salt in a regular bathtub with an ideal soaking time of 12 minutes twice a week.
Magnesium has anti-inflammatory properties that can help relieve swelling in our bodies. During pregnancy, your bones, skin, and muscles stretch to make space for the growing baby which can cause pain and swelling in the body. Taking an Epsom salt bath will help to relax your muscles and heal swelling in all parts of your body.
Drawing a warm bath at the end of a stressful day can alone be relaxing enough, but adding Epsom salt can increase the effect. Magnesium causes the body to secrete the hormone serotonin more, which reduces the fight or flight response of our body. Low-levels of Serotonin can happen due to depression and anxiety. By regulating the amount of Serotonin in your body, Epsom salt can help relax your body.
When your skin starts to stretch, it can become irritable and dry. Epsom salt can help relax your skin and provide a soothing effect. It can also exfoliate your skin and is present in several body scrubs.
Constipation is prevalent in pregnancy and can cause haemorrhoids when combined with the baby's pressure on the uterus. Haemorrhoids can cause the veins around the anus to swell and hurt. Epsom salt baths can help manage haemorrhoids, as warm baths help calm the nerves, and Epsom salt has anti-inflammatory properties.
