Vitamins & Supplements
Updated on 16 December 2022
The needs of your body change when you are pregnant, and sometimes your body may require an extra dose of supplements to keep you and your baby going healthily through this overwhelming journey. If you are confused about what supplements are necessary for you during pregnancy, we are here to help. In this article, we will discuss why you should take supplements during pregnancy and which supplements are safe and beneficial to take during pregnancy.
Here are the most common reasons why your body requires supplements during pregnancy:
As an expecting mother growing a life inside your womb, your body's needs for macronutrients such as protein, carbohydrates and fats increase multifold. To meet this growing need for nutrition and the proper development of the foetus, you must take supplements such as prenatal vitamins during pregnancy.
If you're pregnant and suffering from a nutritional deficiency, then the doctor might ask you to take supplements to correct any nutritional deficiency. Certain nutritional deficiencies can hamper the growth of the baby and even cause certain birth defects. Additionally, some women may develop a nutritional deficiency such as that of iron during pregnancy because the baby starts to absorb the mother's nutrients. In such a case, the expecting mother must consume supplements to prevent any nutritional deficiency.
Women who are pregnant with multiple babies such as twins or triplets require higher micronutrient intake than before. In such a case, consuming supplements can help meet the increased nutritional needs and ensure optimal nutrition for the mother and her babies.
Some women may follow certain dietary restrictions due to an existing medical condition or personal choice. This may prevent them from eating certain foods and gaining the vitamins and minerals present in them. As a result, they may need to take supplements during pregnancy to fulfil the body and baby's nutritional requirements.
Besides prenatal vitamins, here are the most essential supplements a woman requires during pregnancy:
Folate is an excellent source of vitamin B and it helps in fetal growth and development. It reduces the risk of congenital abnormalities and neural tube defects during pregnancy.
Iron supplements are needed because, during the time of pregnancy, the need for blood volume in the body increases by 45%. Iron supplements help in oxygen transport and also enhance the growth and development of the baby’s body.
Magnesium helps in managing immunity, muscle strength, and nerve function in the body of the mothers. It reduces the risk of chronic hypertension in the body and the chance of premature labour.
Vitamin D helps in enhancing bone health, immune function, and cell division, and all of this is essential during pregnancy for both the mother and the child. The deficiency of this supplement can cause gestational diabetes and preterm birth.
Fish oil contains helpful fatty acids which help in the development of your baby’s brain. They are also useful in enhancing the cognitive function of your child and help in dealing with maternal depression as well.
Before taking any supplement, you must consult your doctor once so that they can guide you about which supplements you need, which ones are safe for you and your baby and where you can buy them from. When you are about to become a mother, you already have a lot of things to take care of. So, use a pill box, sticky notes or an alarm clock to remind yourself of your supplements.
