Teething
Updated on 3 November 2023
Teething is a time that can become every parent's nightmare. This is the time when every child has a different kind of behaviour which makes parents worry. Also, this time becomes painful for the child as the gums are making their way out to make the child cry a lot. Also, your child might get a mild fever due to the pain, but this is all normal.
A child feels restless, cries most of the time, and might also catch a mild fever. Teething usually starts when the child is 4 to 7 months old. In some cases, children start teething even after seven months. In case your child is a little late, you still don't need to worry as it is a natural process and can take time.
While teething, the two front teeth, either from the upper or lower jaw, will appear first. Then the molars start coming out next, followed by canines. Gums near the new teeth can swell at this time and be tender.
Sucking the thumb or finger is the primary activity being started by children during this period as they feel relaxed by doing this. This can become a habit in the future that you must avoid as much as you can.
Children need something or the other to chew during this time, for which chew toys are available in the market. Teething rings are also available in markets. But make sure that they are made of soft material to avoid any damage or harm. Teethers are usually stored in the refrigerator to become cold, and the child feels relaxed by using them. But they can become so hard that they can end up damaging the gums at times.
You should avoid medications for softening the gums as it can be harmful, as a child can swallow it, which is not suitable for the child's health. Also, never use tablets available in the market for gum pain relievers for children as they might contain plant poison which is unapproved by FDA.
High fever may or may not arise because of teething. It is advised that you consult a doctor in case of fever.
It would help if you take proper care of the new teeth. Brush them properly after every meal with Childrens' tooth brushes available in the market with soft bristles. You can look out for BPA free finger tooth brush made out of silicon and has soft bristles.
Never let your baby fall asleep with a bottle in his mouth. By doing this, you will avoid milk from pooling around the teeth and creating a breeding ground for decay. Try to add cold food to your child's meals, such as yogurt, refrigerated fruits, and apple sauce.
When your child is growing, you must take care of him. A small mistake can cause permanent damage that calls for extreme caution. These are some things that you must keep in mind when your child is growing his teeth.
